XV Science Week of the Community of Madrid
On Saturday 14 November, we performed various activities thanks to the initiative by the Community of Madrid under the slogan "Know, experience, discover"
We conducted three workshops directed to three different age group:
The infant group (4, 5 and 6 years) was led by Laura Fernández. In this workshop, the children were encouraged to participate in various games involving spatial orientation and mental rotation. Subsequently, several aspects of the workshop with parents of participants were discussed.
The group of Primary school (7, 8 and 9 years) was led by Patrica Gimeno. In this workshop, the children understood a little more what spatial ability was, what it does and how we can develop with games we have at home. Subsequently, all participants trained their space skills (particularly mental rotation) through a computer program created and developed by our research group.
The group of Secundary school (12, 13 and 14 years) was led by Antonio Rodán. In this workshop, boys and girls reflected how spatial ability is present in many everyday activities. Futhermore, we talked about how various activities in their immediate environment can help improve this capacity. Subsequently, all participants were trained in a mental rotation task throught a computer program.
We had tried to show the work we do every day in our research on spatial cognition. These activities arise from an I+D project, led by María José Contreras y María Rosa Elosúa, coordinating these workshops in XV Science Week of the Community of Madrid. We also want to thank the collaboration of our collegue Pedro R. Montoro.
We appreciate the high participation of all children who attended workshops and encouraged their parents to participate in theses cultural activities.
